About Culinary Society
Welcome to the Columbia Culinary Society! Dedicated to the arts of Food, Drink, and the Good Life, the society was founded in the fall of 1998 in order to espouse awareness and campus-wide appreciation of the culinary arts. We strive to educate and enhance the quality of student life through social opportunities, volunteer work, educational forums, and collaborations with other student groups and off-campus organizations.
In the past, we’ve held tastings that have included cheese, chocolate, tea, cake, and soup as well as group demonstrations that have ranged from making tarts to braising meats. We offer regular cooking classes that all Columbia students are welcome to attend and organize dining trips to some of New York’s finest restaurants.
The Culinary Society blog, which has about 4,000 hits per month, was founded in the summer of 2010 by President Matt Powell. In spring 2012, he handed over the reigns to current blog editor Amanda Tien. In the past year, the blog has grown from a writing staff of 3 to 35 and features a variety of series covering unique topics such as neighborhood profiles, vegetarian and vegan eateries, international posts from students participating in Study Abroad, dorm friendly cooking recipes, and other topics that interest and appeal to the student body. Additionally, the blog stays true to its roots in the Culinary Society by posting reminders and photos of the society’s on- and off-campus events.
For those of you interested in joining the Culinary General Body Mailing List follow the simple directions below! You’ll receive weekly emails about our upcoming study breaks, random food related news, recipes, and chances to help cook for our big catering events! The mailing list is the best way to stay up to date about weekly meetings, upcoming field trips, and goings-on in the city. Feel free to mention in your email if you’re also interested in joining the Executive Board. The Executive Board is in charge of planning our events throughout the semester and meets on a weekly basis. Send us your email at [email protected] and we’ll be sure to add you to the general body mailing list and/or the executive board mailing list. Simply put “Subscribe to Listserv” in the subject line!
Instead of having weekly meetings for Spring 2013, Culinary Society has elected to hold special events on a month-to-month basis.
